In Memoriam

James T. Knox

The Design Alliance Architects announces the passing of one of our founders, James T Knox. Jim joined a small group of architects in the late 1970s who combined their experience and talents to form a new architectural firm. The idea was to create a collaborative practice where individuals with shared values could work better as a group, than they could as individuals. We were architects who could have, and did have, their own offices, but who wanted to work in a studio without anyone’s name on the door.

Jim brought his considerable talents to the studio every day for over 25 years before retiring. His manner was quiet at the drafting board. But his presentations and design discussions were full of wit, coupled with frank, direct and often unforgettable advice. Jim was an unabashed mid-century modernist whose own home showcased his abilities. He was a joy to be with in, and outside the studio. Jim was an architect with wide ranging interests, and he had the energy to pursue them. His legacy is in his architecture, the work of the architects who had be benefit of working with him, the organizations where he volunteered, and in his family.

We fondly remember Jim Knox in the architectural office and practice he helped to create. The photos below are of the wonderful home Jim designed for his family.
